Peter Seeger :The Power of Song

He is one of the US’s best known singers, a product of the folk tradition. As a  singer , song writer , author and activist, Seeger has certainly given the world at large as much as any man reasonably could.

He’s lived a life rich in both adventure  and creativity , and produced a body od songs such as ” If I had a Hammer (1949),  “Turn Turn  Turn ! (1954), Where have all the flowers gone? (1955) and a popular
arrangement of the traditional “We shall Overcome (1947) that have been wooven into  US’s’ cultural fabric, mostly via interpretations by other artists.
Seeger has grammy award and a Grammy lifetume achivement award to his credit, as well as career honours from the Kennedy Center  and national endowment of the arts.

He is been even inducted into the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame and receieved the Felix Varela Medal, Cuba’s highest honour , for ” humanistic and artistic work in defense of the environment and against rascim.

To be recognized to scuh an extent, Seeger admits , is gratifying- to a point..”It is a nice feeling ” he says, ” but on the other hand it is embarrssing , too, because they give me too much credit . They really do . There is hardly a song I have written that I did not borrow from somebody else. And If people like “If I Had a hammer” then thank Peter, Paul and Mary for rewriting my second mate melody- and the same thing with almost every other song i have written, really”

And I have made a huge number of mistakes with my family , in singing and in politics.” So dont copy what I have done. ” Seeger says. ” Please , make your own mistakes ,Dont make my mistakes over again”
